Brain Dump Template: How to Empty Your Head and Actually Get Things Done
A simple 4-step brain dump method with a free printable template, plus how to sort the list so it turns into a plan.
Why a brain dump works
Unfinished tasks keep looping in your head until they are written down somewhere you trust. Getting them onto one page frees up attention and makes the real priorities easier to see.
The 4-step method
- Dump: set a 10-minute timer and write every task, worry and idea, no sorting
- Sort: mark each item Do today, This week, Someday, or Not mine
- Pick 3: choose up to three items for today and circle the one that matters most
- Park the rest: move weekly items to your planner and cross off what you are dropping
What to put on a brain dump template
- A big open box for the dump itself
- Four sort columns or tick boxes
- A Top 3 for today section
- A small notes area for ideas you don't want to lose
How often to do it
Once a day for 5 minutes works for most people, plus a longer one during a weekly reset. Do one any time your head feels too full to start.
